Herbal Consultation for Humans

Hello and welcome to this special corner of my website!

My approach to health and wellness is, for humans as for dogs and cats, an integrated path of herbal formulations, with dietary adjustments as indicated. While most people think of me as a canine or animal herbalist, and that is of course true, all my formal training has been related to humans, and some of it very intensive – plus, I have worked casually as a home/community herbalist for humans since the mid-nineties. My professional experience has been focused on canines, but I have never stopped studying and working with humans on a more informal level. And now, after several clients have asked me to work with them as well as their dog and shared with me how much the herbs helped THEM, I am finally working professionally with humans.

Herbs on table

In a nutshell; I truly love herbal medicine, and the art of helping people to achieve their best possible health, naturally. The service I offer is long distance via email primarily, and, as with the dogs, I am experiencing great results with that method. If you would like to book an appointment, I can usually accommodate you within about a week. You will need to purchase your own herbs, but I send links to each and every item I want you to use, as well as detailed instructions and a handout that explains herbal safety, potential interactions, duration and dosing, and more.

This consultation includes the initial time spent, including my assessment of your Intake form, correspondence on the day of our appointment, my formulation of your personalized protocol and strategy sheet, and discussion on the day I send your formulations. Between two and three hours in total. In addition, I am available to connect after you have started the protocol if any questions arise, and then we book a follow-up in three months. If you feel the consult has resolved the issue you contacted me about, we don’t need to book time, but as many conditions need time to improve with herbs – the holistic way is the slow way – many clients like to book a follow-up to change the herbs or adjust dose, for example. If dietary changes are involved, that may also indicate an ongoing service, with one or more follow-ups.

The initial consultation service is $100.00 (CAD). All follow-ups are $75.00 (CAD) and cover one hour of time. I look forward to working with you! You can contact me directly at catlane@thepossiblecanine.com.

How This Works

A consultation with me starts with a little exploratory email or phone chat to make sure I’m the right person for what you are seeking. Once we book, I send you an Intake form, with a whole lot of questions I need to have filled in at least 24 hours prior to our date.

On the day we have scheduled, I start by sending you my list of recommendations, which may include additional advice, often dietary (I will need a thorough description of your normal diet), but also some lifestyle suggestions, if indicated. My practice combines a blend of traditional herbalism and wisdom as well as the latest research and knowledge on herbs and nutrition. In this way  I am able to utilize what has worked for centuries by traditional healers, as well as the many advancements that the modern medicine has to offer.

Dried flowers spilling out of glass container on tableThe herbal protocols I develop will be created after reviewing your whole history, and with respect for your preferences, always. For example, I often prefer clients purchase individual herbs and blend their own infusions, and we often use alcohol-based tincture, but there are alternatives to both, and I work with my client’s preferences as an integral part of the service. Once you have obtained the herbs and begin taking them, I am here to connect with as you go, to check in weekly or as needed, and always provide answers my clinical handouts may not have covered. For the most success, compliance with lifestyle changes as well as regularly using the herbs, is essential.

After you have been on the full protocol (I generally have people add herbs in stages) and we are seeing your consultation goals met, we schedule a three month follow-up (recommended, not mandatory of course) and revisit things at that time. While some herbs can be used longtime, with others, it’s advisable to change them after a few months use, or perhaps they are no longer necessary. In some cases, we continue with daily teas but pause the more potent tinctures. Each person is a unique individual – just like dogs 😊 – so the way a consult plays out will vary.

Experience, Qualifications & Biography

Girls and dog walking through sunlite neadowAs with any practitioner, I have much more experience with some aspects of human health than others, and these include nervous system, kidney, liver and digestive health, cardiovascular health and disorders, urinary tract, skin and respiratory disease. I have worked with a great deal of cancer in dogs and therefore will consider a cancer case.

I will only ever work with someone I feel very confident I can help. Over more than thirty years in this work I have seen, over and over, the incredible power of plant medicine, especially when chosen to address the whole person; their health history, family tendencies, dietary patterns, constitutional type (energetics) and more.

An herbal consultation may also be utilized in a preventive way, with our focus going to keeping and fine tuning good health, adding herbs to head off health issues that have a familial or lifestyle basis. It’s ideal to work with me before a problem arises!
