I’ve loved this one ever since I first read it, somewhere online, many years ago. How true, start to finish (although I know none of you would be using a choke collar!)
I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be.
Today I sniffed
Many dog butts — I celebrate
By kissing your face.
I sound the alarm!
Paperboy — come to kill us all —
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!
I sound the alarm!
Garbage man — come to kill us all —
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!
I lift my leg and
Whiz on each bush. Hello, Spot —
Sniff this and weep.
I Hate my choke chain —
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack
Ack Ack Ack Ack Ack!
Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot — no greater bliss — well,
Maybe catching cats.
Look in my eyes and
Deny it. No human could
Love you as much I do.

Little Dog’s Rhapsody in the Night (Percy Three)
(Mary Oliver)
He puts his check against mine
and makes small, expressive sounds.
And when I’m awake, or awake enough
he turns upside down, his four paws
in the air
and his eyes dark and fervent.
Tell me you love me, he says.
Tell me again.
Could there be a sweeter arrangement? Over and over
he gets to ask it.
I get to tell.
Love Mary Oliver…don’t know this poem. Thank you for sharing!
